Oman has extended the bidding period for the planned Masirah desalination project, keeping open an important private-sector opportunity in the Sultanate’s water infrastructure programme.
MEED reported on 25 August 2026 that the planned facility will have production capacity of 8,000 cubic metres of water a day and is to be developed under a build-own-operate structure.
The BOO model places the scheme within Oman’s established framework for attracting private investment into utility infrastructure, with the successful developer expected to finance, construct, own and operate the facility under a long-term offtake arrangement.
The extended tender process gives interested developer consortiums additional time to finalise technical, commercial and financing structures for the scheme.
The project is expected to involve desalination technology, seawater intake and outfall systems, pumping equipment, electrical infrastructure, civil works, control systems and associated connection works.
For developers, lenders and EPC contractors, Masirah is particularly relevant because it combines a government-backed utility requirement with a project-finance structure, providing potential roles for international equity investors, commercial banks and technical partners.
