WSP appointed to design King Fahd International Airport expansion

Dammam Airports Company has appointed international engineering consultancy WSP to design the next stage of King Fahd International Airport’s development in Dammam.
The scope covers expansion of the passenger terminals, facility upgrades and improvements to airport entrances and access infrastructure. The programme is intended to raise the airport’s capacity to approximately 32 million passengers annually. The design-contract value was not disclosed.
This is a new design-stage milestone following earlier infrastructure agreements worth more than SAR1.2 billion announced for the airport. It should therefore be presented as an update to the airport-development programme rather than as an entirely new project. The appointment was announced by the Saudi Press Agency.
Why it matters: Completion of the design work should define future construction and specialist systems packages. International airport contractors and suppliers should position for terminal construction, baggage handling, security and screening, passenger-processing technology, airfield systems, building services, transport access, sustainability consulting and programme-management work.
