VA Tech Wabag has formally signed the contract for the second stage of Kuwait’s Doha seawater reverse-osmosis desalination plant, enabling the $372mn scheme to proceed towards execution.
Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy originally selected the Wabag-led venture in June. The company is delivering the project through an unincorporated joint venture with Kuwait’s Heavy Engineering Industries & Shipbuilding Company.
The scope includes design, engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of a 60mn-imperial-gallon-a-day desalination facility with a recarbonation system. Construction is scheduled to take 36 months, followed by a five-year operation and maintenance period.
Solar photovoltaic equipment will supply part of the facility’s electricity requirements. This component should create additional opportunities for solar contractors, electrical suppliers, control-system providers and specialist water-technology companies.
The agreement marks Wabag’s entry into Kuwait and adds a major new water project to the GCC construction pipeline. Attention now shifts to mobilisation, supplier appointments and the release of subcontracting and equipment packages.
