The UAE has accelerated procurement linked to Etihad Rail and associated freight corridors as the federation pushes to strengthen industrial connectivity and regional trade integration.
The projects are expected to support cargo transport between ports, industrial zones and neighbouring Gulf states while laying the groundwork for expanded passenger rail services.
Executives involved in the rail sector said recent tenders covered freight terminals, maintenance depots and rail-linked industrial infrastructure stretching across Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the northern emirates. Officials view the railway network as central to long-term plans for economic diversification and lower-carbon transport systems.
“Rail infrastructure is becoming economically strategic for the Gulf,” said one regional transport economist. “The UAE wants to reduce logistics costs, strengthen industrial integration and support regional trade corridors.”
The expansion comes as Gulf states intensify efforts to improve economic connectivity amid shifting global trade patterns. Analysts said rail infrastructure could become increasingly important as governments seek alternatives to road freight and strengthen links between ports, airports and manufacturing zones.
Contractors said the UAE rail market continued to attract strong international interest because of its scale, financing strength and integration with industrial policy. Informed sources said additional rolling stock and signalling tenders were expected in coming months.
