Saudi Arabia and UAE agree rail and power-link studies
Saudi Arabia and the UAE have signed a memorandum of understanding covering studies for cross-border rail connectivity and electricity interconnection.
The agreement was signed in Riyadh on 8 October by UAE Investment Minister Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, according to Emirates News Agency.
The rail element sets out general principles and provides for technical and economic studies of links between the two countries. It addresses freight movement, logistics integration and cross-border transport.
The electricity component covers interconnection and the exchange and sale of power. Technical, economic and environmental feasibility studies will assess potential links, alongside coordination with other GCC states on expansion of the Gulf interconnection system.
The announcement did not specify routes, capacity, project values, delivery dates or a procurement schedule. It establishes a framework for studies and cooperation; no construction contract or invitation to bid was announced.
