Saudi Arabia Prioritises Sports Boulevard Contracts Ahead of Global Events

Saudi Arabia is accelerating procurement linked to Riyadh’s Sports Boulevard development as the kingdom intensifies preparations for Expo 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

The project, which aims to create a vast network of sports, cycling and recreational infrastructure across the capital, has become a central pillar of Riyadh’s broader urban transformation strategy.

Officials say the development is intended to improve quality of life, increase public participation in sports and reshape Riyadh into a more pedestrian-friendly city. Construction executives said new contracts covering landscaping, mobility infrastructure and mixed-use developments were expected to generate billions of dollars in procurement opportunities over the next several years.

Urban planners said the Sports Boulevard reflected a broader change in Saudi urban policy away from purely car-centric expansion. “The kingdom is trying to create cities that are more liveable and internationally competitive,” said one regional infrastructure consultant. “Projects like this are as much about image and lifestyle as they are about sports.”

The project also aligns with Saudi Arabia’s wider effort to stimulate tourism, entertainment and domestic consumer spending through public infrastructure investment. Analysts said authorities increasingly viewed urban recreation projects as tools for attracting expatriate talent, foreign investors and international visitors into Riyadh.

Commentators believe Riyadh’s urban redevelopment programme could reshape the city more profoundly than any previous wave of Saudi infrastructure investment. For many investors and residents alike, the Sports Boulevard is emerging as a symbol of the kingdom’s attempt to redefine both its urban identity and its global image.
