Oman has issued a tender for consultancy services linked to an 800MW–1GW hydrogen-capable power plant, marking one of the Gulf’s most significant attempts to integrate future hydrogen demand into mainstream electricity infrastructure planning.
The proposed independent power project is expected to support Oman’s broader strategy of combining renewable energy development with flexible gas and hydrogen-based electricity generation. Industry executives said the project reflected growing concern among Gulf policymakers over long-term energy security and carbon-reduction commitments.
Energy economists said Oman was increasingly positioning itself as a regional laboratory for hydrogen-linked infrastructure innovation. “The country is trying to future-proof its power sector while creating demand for its emerging hydrogen economy,” said one Gulf-based utilities adviser.
The procurement programme comes as governments across the Middle East explore technologies capable of balancing renewable energy intermittency with stable baseload electricity generation. Analysts said hydrogen-compatible power plants could eventually become an important component of Gulf energy systems as renewable penetration rises.
Engineering firms specialising in power generation and hydrogen technologies said the project had attracted strong international interest because of its scale and strategic significance. Informed sources said authorities were particularly focused on technologies capable of transitioning gradually from natural gas towards higher hydrogen blends.
