Oman Advances 2GW Jabal Abyad Energy Storage Project and 1GW Digital Infrastructure Platform

Oman is strengthening its position as a regional hub for clean energy and digital infrastructure with the advancement of two landmark projects—a 2-gigawatt (GW) Jabal Abyad Energy Storage Project and a 1GW Digital Infrastructure Platform—that are expected to generate significant investment and procurement opportunities across the Sultanate.

The projects are being developed by EDF Power Solutions, in partnership with Omani and international stakeholders, and form part of Oman’s long-term strategy to modernize its electricity network, expand renewable energy integration and support the country’s digital economy.

The Jabal Abyad Energy Storage Project, with a planned capacity of 2GW, is designed to become one of the world’s largest pumped-storage hydropower facilities. The project will store surplus electricity generated from renewable energy sources and release it during periods of peak demand, enhancing grid reliability and supporting the integration of large-scale solar and wind power into Oman’s national electricity system. Once operational, the facility will provide long-duration energy storage capable of balancing intermittent renewable generation while strengthening energy security and improving overall grid flexibility. The project is expected to involve extensive civil engineering works, tunnelling, reservoirs, underground power stations, transmission infrastructure and electrical systems.

In parallel, the consortium is advancing plans for a 1GW Digital Infrastructure Platform, aimed at supporting the rapid growth of data centres, artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and high-performance digital services.

The platform will provide dedicated power infrastructure for large-scale digital facilities, enabling the development of hyperscale data centres and advanced computing infrastructure to serve regional and international markets. The initiative supports Oman’s ambition to become a strategic destination for digital investment, leveraging its geographic location, renewable energy resources and expanding international connectivity. Together, the two projects are expected to generate substantial procurement opportunities for engineering consultants, EPC contractors, equipment manufacturers, electrical and mechanical specialists, tunnelling contractors, transmission system providers and digital infrastructure developers.

Industry analysts believe the developments represent a significant step in Oman’s energy transition, combining renewable energy storage with next-generation digital infrastructure to support economic diversification under Oman Vision 2040.

As both projects progress through development and procurement, additional contract packages are expected to be released covering design, construction, power systems, grid connections, telecommunications infrastructure and long-term operations and maintenance.

The combined investments further reinforce Oman’s growing role in regional renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure and digital transformation, while creating new opportunities for local and international companies participating in the Sultanate’s expanding project market.
