Saudi Arabia’s Diriyah Company has awarded a $1.53bn construction contract for the Diriyah Arena Superblock, reinforcing the kingdom’s determination to expand large-scale entertainment and tourism infrastructure despite mounting scrutiny over the cost of Vision 2030 mega-projects.
The contract forms part of the broader Diriyah development on the north-western edge of Riyadh, which authorities hope will evolve into one of the Middle East’s leading heritage and leisure destinations.
The arena district is expected to include indoor event facilities, mixed-use commercial developments, hospitality assets and public spaces designed to host international concerts, sporting events and cultural festivals. Executives familiar with the project said the development is intended to strengthen Riyadh’s bid to become a regional entertainment capital ahead of Expo 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Informed sources said the district would also complement the kingdom’s broader effort to increase domestic consumer spending on leisure activities historically dominated by overseas travel.
Market observers said the contract signals that Saudi authorities continue to prioritise projects capable of generating recurring tourism and event revenues, even as more speculative schemes face delays or redesigns. “Entertainment infrastructure has moved into the category of strategic investment,” said one Gulf-based project consultant. “The focus is increasingly on assets that support hospitality, tourism and urban activity rather than purely symbolic architecture.”
