Construction Starts on Oman’s 890MW Duqm Power Project

Construction has started on the 890MW Duqm Independent Power Project, moving one of Oman’s largest new electricity-generation developments into the engineering, procurement and construction phase.
The combined-cycle gas turbine plant is being developed in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm by Coastal Power, representing an international consortium comprising South Korea’s Korea Western Power, Qatar’s Nebras Energy, UAE-based Etihad Water and Electricity and Oman’s Bahwan Infrastructure Services.
Nama Power & Water Procurement awarded the project earlier this year under a long-term power-purchase arrangement. The Duqm development forms part of a wider investment programme of approximately RO1bn ($2.6bn) covering new combined-cycle generation at Duqm and Misfah.
PowerChina and Doosan Heavy Industries Muscat have been named as EPC contractors. South Korea’s Doosan Enerbility previously disclosed that its portion of the project is worth about KRW530bn, equivalent to approximately $350m. Its scope includes key generation equipment such as steam turbines and generators.
WSP International is serving as project consultant. The plant is targeted for completion in 2029 and will provide additional firm generation capacity for Duqm and the wider Omani electricity network.
The start of construction moves the project into a stage likely to generate continuing requirements for civil works, electrical and mechanical systems, substations, transmission connections, equipment, construction services and specialist subcontracting.
