Bahrain has accelerated procurement linked to the Airport City development surrounding Bahrain International Airport as authorities seek to strengthen the kingdom’s role in Gulf logistics, aviation and tourism markets.
The project includes commercial districts, hospitality assets, logistics facilities and transport infrastructure intended to capitalise on the modernisation of Bahrain International Airport completed in recent years.
Executives familiar with the procurement process said authorities were increasingly positioning the airport zone as a regional business and transit hub.
Industry analysts said “Bahrain understands that aviation infrastructure alone is not enough,” said one Gulf logistics consultant. The strategy now is to build an integrated commercial ecosystem around the airport.”
The procurement activity comes amid broader efforts by Bahrain to diversify its economy beyond banking and hydrocarbons. Officials have increasingly focused on sectors such as logistics, tourism and digital services capable of generating employment and attracting foreign investment.
Contractors said the airport expansion programme had attracted interest from regional developers and international infrastructure groups. Additional logistics and free-zone packages are expected in coming months.
Commentators believe Bahrain’s aviation and logistics strategy could strengthen the kingdom’s regional competitiveness if integrated successfully with Saudi Arabia’s eastern province and wider Gulf trade networks. Additional procurement tied to warehousing, hospitality and transport systems is expected over the next decade.
