Bahrain Accelerates Metro Procurement as Gulf Transport Competition Intensifies
Bahrain has intensified procurement activity linked to the Bahrain Metro project, signalling Manama’s determination to modernise urban transport infrastructure and reduce pressure on congested road networks connecting the kingdom’s rapidly expanding residential and commercial districts.
The first phase of the metro programme is expected to include an automated rail network linking Bahrain International Airport, central Manama, diplomatic districts and major residential developments.
Industry executives said recent tender activity covering engineering consultancy, systems integration and infrastructure design had revived interest among international rail contractors.
Transport economists said Bahrain’s renewed focus on rail infrastructure reflected broader Gulf efforts to modernise urban mobility and reduce dependence on private vehicles. “The metro is increasingly viewed as an economic infrastructure project rather than simply a transport scheme,” said one regional infrastructure adviser. “Authorities see it as critical to supporting tourism, business activity and future population growth.”
Contractors involved in regional transport projects said Bahrain’s strategic location between Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf market continued to make the metro commercially attractive. Informed sources said Asian and European consortiums remained active in discussions linked to future construction phases.
Market watchers believe the metro could eventually transform commuting patterns and urban development across Bahrain. Additional transport and transit-oriented development tenders are expected over the next several years as the kingdom attempts to modernise its infrastructure base.
